Static Line (S/L) Instructor Training – USPA Rating

The Static Line (S/L) Instructor rating lets you teach students from their very first jump with automatic opening: the student’s parachute is opened by a line (the static line) attached to the aircraft. It gives you access to teaching the complete First Jump Course (FJC) using this method.

The course is shared with the IAD method: a single training prepares you for both ratings (combo option, see our prices).

1. Prerequisites

  • Valid USPA membership
  • USPA C License
  • USPA Coach rating (current or expired)
  • SL/IAD pre-course activities completed and pre-course exam passed (online)
  • Pre-course: observe instructors at your drop zone during first jump courses, help with students’ ground preparation and make 4 dispatches with experienced skydivers

2. Course structure

The course takes 3 days for a candidate who is not yet an instructor: about 2 days of ground training and 1 day of jumping. For a current USPA instructor it is shortened to 1 to 1.5 days (about half a day on the ground and half a day of jumping). The schedule depends on the weather.

You need an IRM and a SIM less than 24 months old.

On the ground, the program covers:

  • the student’s initial progression and first-jump ground training
  • the freefall skills needed to accompany students on longer delays
  • static line set-up and student dispatch methods
  • spotting techniques

In the air: set-up and student dispatch at the door, briefing on dispatch methods and practice with experienced skydivers.

3. Evaluation

For a candidate who is not yet an instructor:

  • satisfactory Category D freefall and canopy training
  • a satisfactory score on a Category D jump
  • satisfactory Category B ground training

For a current instructor: satisfactory Category B ground training.

For all candidates:

  • successfully jump-master two “students” (roles played by peers) in Static Line or IAD
  • demonstrate the ability to spot correctly

4. Rating privileges

  • teach the complete first jump course and take students up from their very first jump with this method
  • sign off licenses, special training and Coach renewals
  • supervise and mentor Coaches and prospective Coaches

5. Annual renewal

Within your USPA membership year you must:

  • complete and have verified 15 dispatches in the rated method
  • assist in an SL or IAD first jump course
  • take part in a Rating Renewal Seminar

6. Expired rating

  • Expired for less than 2 years: one satisfactory SL/IAD evaluation dispatch with an examiner, the pre-course exam, assisting in a first jump course and attending a Rating Renewal Seminar.
  • Expired for more than 2 years: you must retake and pass the full SL/IAD course.
